Drop Mobility partners with City of Kingston to launch a two-year community bike sharing program
Kingston, On. | May 10, 2019 — After a successful pilot in Kingston during the summer of 2017, Drop Mobility has been approved by the City of Kingston to be the exclusive bike share provider in the city for the next two years.
The program officially launched on May 1st, and bikes are now deployed on Kingston streets for residents and tourists to use.
“We understand the benefits to active transportation and fighting climate change when people use bicycles instead of cars. Community bike sharing offers this affordable service in cities around the world,” says Paul MacLatchy, Environment Director of the City of Kingston.
These bikes are a newer model from the bikes that were offered during the 2017 pilot. They feature a larger frame, with lighter material, a 3-speed gear shifting system, and a lock-to cable lock which allows users to lock bikes to bike racks and bike posts.
Using the Drop Mobility smartphone app, a rider can locate a nearby bike and unlock the bike. When finished riding, the rider can park and lock the bike to any designated bike rack or demarcated bike ‘hub’, using an attached lock-to mechanism.
Drop is currently working with post-secondary institutions in Kingston, and users will soon be able to drop off and pick up bikes from campuses.
An official launch party will be held by Drop Mobility on May 24th from 12PM-5PM in Springer Market Square to kick-off the season. Kingstonians are invited to attend!
“We are excited to continue our relationship with Kingston, who have been perfect partners. We are further committed to creating operating models and hardware that both last for the long-haul and solve a real transportation need for all residents of the communities we serve. Through our continued partnership with Kingston, we will deliver an organized, reliable and sustainable micromobility service,” said Qiming Weng, CEO of Drop Mobility.
